A family is dysfunctional when it doesn´t fulfill its role of providing shelter and maintenance to its members, collaborating with their education, personal growth and well-being.
Usually the causes of a family not functioning properly are due to conflicts that have their origin in emotionally immature parents, which slows the psychological development of children, affecting their mental health.
Between the extreme cases they are that parents (or one of them) are addict to substances, breaks the law habitually or suffers of an untreated mental illness; also that children suffer from neglect or abuse, or are affected by a bad relationship between parents.
However, there´re family groups that are dysfunctional without appearing to be so, even though they maintain a facade of “normality” in front of strangers, as is the case when parents are violent physically or psychologically indoors, or use devaluation to manipulate emotionally to their children (for example, often repeating things like “you don´t help at all”, “your cousin is a better student than you”, “you are a lazy”, etc,) or when they want to impose an ideal of perfection on the child that leaves no room for games or activities in which the child can relax.
The statistics collected in various countries of the world prove that about 95 percent of individuals who suffer from some type of emotional disorder have grown up in dysfunctional families…
An unbalanced family will tend to create emotionally unbalanced individuals, while a balanced family will contribute to the development of its members and the harmonious integration of these in society, allowing healthy patterns of coexistence and deep ties based on love and respect to be perpetuated.
